On the 21st of November the Bunker, which houses the museum’s reserve collection and office, was alive with the bustle of young people as part of Kids in Museums Takeover Day! The afternoon was part of the Gosport Heritage Generator project- a brilliant scheme that aims to highlight local heritage and invest in the future.

Cleaning and Recording objects
Every year children and young people are invited to museums to ‘takeover’ and find out all about what happens behind the scenes. This year the theme was ‘Careers’ and the participants found out about how to keep objects safe, deal with common museum pests, and came up with ideas on how to display artefacts in the museum.

The Gosport Heritage Generator project is supported by funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Hampshire Cultural Trust, and Gosport Borough Council. It aims to shine a spotlight on the town’s rich heritage, unearthing untold stories, developing hands-on heritage experiences, and investing in both individuals and groups to promote and support the sustainability of heritage in the town for the future.

Laying out objects for the new displays
We are really excited and grateful that our application was successful allowing us to launch our ‘Dive through Time’ project working with local home educating families. The project is offering young people the opportunity to learn about local history, explore the museums collections, and develop new skills.

Object Handling

The next step is to take their new knowledge and use a 3D printer to design and make resources that will help younger visitors enjoy and explore the museum. We will be learning alongside them all about 3D printers! We are looking forward to discovering what our newest recruits will come up with as they look at the museum through fresh eyes!

The project runs until March 2026-watch this space for updates on what the young people create for the new museum!
