Whale made of plastic waster erupting from a canal in Bruges. We see the white underbelly arching backwards over a pedestrian bridge over the canal with buildings of old Bruges in the background.

In response to Bruges’ Triennial theme, ‘Liquid City’, StudioKCA created a 11.5m blue and white whale from 5 tons of plastic recovered from the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The whale is called, ‘Skyscraper’ – whales are the natural skyscrapers of the ocean when they breech the surface.

StudioKCA, a Brooklyn based architecture and design studio, tell the story in their video, ‘The Making of Skyscraper 2018’.

On 1st June 2019, David Jones, underwater photographer and founder of ‘Just One Ocean’ will be giving a talk about Plastic Pollution in our Oceans. Some of the statistics about our plastic profligacy are shocking and shaming. His talk will cover how we got here and what we can do about it. It is certain to surprise and inspire you.  More details and how to get tickets are on our ‘What’s On’ page.
